Devlog 001 — Welcome to the Build Floor

·2 min read

Every lab needs a sign on the door. This is ours.

MyIndieLab is a one-developer game laboratory. Small experiments go in one end; sometimes a game falls out the other end. Everything that happens in between gets documented here — the prototypes, the playtests, the postmortems, and the tools that got built along the way.

What actually happens here

The loop is simple and deliberately small:

  1. Prototype — one mechanic, a box of grey rectangles, ninety seconds of gameplay.
  2. Playtest — hand it to strangers and watch them break it.
  3. Decide — promote it to a project, or feed it back into the idea flask.
  4. Ship or autopsy — either a release, or a written postmortem so the lesson survives.

A prototype that teaches you nothing cost exactly as much as one that changes everything. Make sure it's the second kind.

Why write it down

Indie development has a memory problem. Projects die, folders get archived, and the why evaporates while the code sits around forever. The devlog is the fix: each entry is a snapshot of what was believed at the time, which makes future mistakes deliciously obvious.

What's next

The current resident of the build floor is Prototype H-07, a one-mechanic arcade thing about momentum and regret. It's in playtest now, which means the next few posts will be equal parts notes and scars.

If you want to follow along, this site is the feed. New entries land here first — raw numbers, honest numbers.
